True Whit: An Interview with Whitney Port

By Nicolle

After having her personal life broadcast across national television on MTV’s “The Hills” and her own spinoff “The City,” and in the wake of launching her own clothing line, whitney eve, fashion icon and reality-TV princess Whitney Port decided to try a new venture: literature. I sat down with her at the Mall of America to get some insight – and a few fashion tips.

Nicolle: What was the inspiration for “True Whit: Designing a Life of Style, Beauty, and Fun”?

Whitney: Throughout being on the TV show (“The City”) and in the fashion industry, I was getting all these how-to style questions from girls my age, a little younger and a little older, who are trying to navigate through this kind of quarter-life crisis (as my mom calls it). And I wanted to put it all in writing and be a guiding voice for girls who wanted tips on everything from the five keys pieces to have in your wardrobe and how to hide a hangover, to more important advice like job interviewing, and dating and things that have more depth to them.

N: If you could give 20-somethings one piece of advice what would it be?

W: I would say the biggest thing is to find support around you, and fill yourself with that positive energy. We have all these people in our lives who we eventually sort of weed out because they have a negative energy. The sooner we do that, the better, and the more confidence you’re going to gain. Confidence is really the key characteristic that you need to have to conquer everything in life.

N: What was the hardest part about compiling all the tips and advice you wanted to include in the book?

W: Having the patience to put it all together! I wanted to put so much in the book and I wanted to make sure I didn’t leave anything out. Also, compiling the pictures was really difficult. I have photos from when I was five years old in the book. We went through everything in our house – there are five kids in my family and we each have a box of all of our personal pictures – and we went through that. I wanted the book to be really colorful and have lots of pictures because I think everyone wants to see where you start from and then where you can get.

N: What are your plans for after you’re done with your book tour and promoting the book?

W: Continuing to focus on my clothing line (whitney eve) and that’s really taking up most of my time right now. My fall collection is debuting in a couple of weeks so most of my energy will be devoted to that.

N: What style tips can you give Minnesotans looking to be chic but stay warm as well? Check out Whitney’s answer in the video below!

Your turn, readers! What’s your fave style tip? Will you read Whit’s book? Tell me in the comments below or shoot me an email at [email protected].
